Garth Nix. The Old Kingdom -4 books series, Keys to the Kingdom-7 book series(7th isn't due out till March 2010 i think), and The Seventh Tower-6 book series (only 2 have been released). Both my daughter (12 yrs old) and I love Garth. I convinced her to read Keys before I did and I didn't realize that the series wasn't finished yet. She has been mad at me ever since! Really she got tears in her eyes when I told her why I couldn't find the seventh book.

While everyone was reading Babysitter's Club (though I did read some) and Goosebumps, I was actually into Christopher Pike's books. It didn't feel like kiddie books while reading them. The ones I read had this complexity to them that drew me into the characters. His books were either it was urban fantasy or mystery based and it has affected how I read today. (In fact, I hadn't seriously read a book for pleasure and stuck with the author since then until the Dark Days novels start coming out.)
Some of the books of his that I read and liked: The Ancient Evil: Chain Letter 2, Last Vampire: Creatures of Forever, Fall Into Darkness (which ended up being a TV movie), and I believe Scavenger Hunt.
(Though my favorite book when I was in high school to read was his The Season of Passage, which was an adult novel. It pretty much mashed up Mars exploration, vampiric like aliens, an epic battle between two long forgotten races, and the bonds between two sisters. )

I think I had the almost all of them. Oh, and Sweet Valley High. I assure you, I am not proud of this. lmao I have never heard of Christopher Pike. Interesting. When I was a teen I read Elfquest books, books by Mercedes Lackey, Jennifer Robertson, and whatever kind of naughty romance book I could get without my mom knowing. Good times, good times.

I'm 21 and read almost as much YA as adult UF fiction. One of my absoulute favourite series is Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy. Series title may seem a little chessy but the content really isn't! They're dark and gritty and Rose (the protagonist) is sassy, smart and flawed. The characters are really well rounded and the storylines are well plotted. I'm dying to have the fifth book, Spirit Bound. I couldn't put any of the first four down at all!
Another one that I'd say is a must read in my books is Lili St. Crow's Strange Angels'. Again, dark and gritty with awesome characters. Got completely sucked in and couldn't put them down! I don't exactly like the protag, Dru, all the time, but at the same time, I love her and can't get enough of her world.
Vampire Academy series in order: Vampire Academy Frostbite Shadow Kiss Blood Promise Spirit Bound (out May 18th)
Strange Angels: Strange Angels Betrayals Jealousy (out 29th July)

I also just read the Strange Angels books in the past few weeks and I agree with your review of them Cem- excellent, dark, intense. Dru has some very teenage feelings, emotions, and thoughts which is quite refreshing from the usual kick-ass teenage heroines and heros. At the same time, she's different enough with just enough edge to confront the things that go bump in the night.
I've also got Graceling, which I am hoping to read tomorrow.

You put it perfectly Freedom, that is exactly why I'm so taken with Dru and her world.

Thanks for the suggestions, Cem. I'm got a slow growing pile of YA that I haven't jumped into yet. So far they include:
Kim Harrison Melissa Marr Rachel Vincent Kelley Armstrong
There may be more, but my brain isn't currently working fully.

After...what, a full year of nagging from my friends, I've finally had the chance to read The Hunger Games and lemme tell you, this book does not disappoint! It's edgy, intense, and shows the darker side of humanity.
I will be reading Catching Fire, hopefully soon. It's sitting on my bookshelf. I don't really have much due this week for school . . .

Ooh I love Perfect Chemistry! Great book, so is the follow up, Rules of Attraction, but my fave of Simone's books (that I've read so far) is Leaving Paradise.
I've been on a bit of a YA binge of late, just coming out of it now really, but some great ones that I'd highly recommed are: Shade - Jeri Smith-Ready White Cat - Holly Black Glimmerglass - Jenna Black
And the latest Vampire Academy book, Spirit Bound, was immense as well.

I just read Glimmerglass two weeks ago- it was fabulous! Very real, likeable characters with realistic faults and personality traits. I also read Girl at Sea by Maureen Johnson which was also a fun book!

I follow Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely series. Love it! I cant believe the series is getting closer to it's end. I can't decide which book is my favorite but seem to be drawn to books 2 and 4 a lot. I also just read Sherrilyn Kenyon's Chronicles of Nick. Loved it too. Funny, lots of action and if you read her Dark Hunter adult series, it just opens up a whole new can of worms in that story line.

I'm really not a big fan of YA books (except for Harry Potter!) but I did find one by accident that I found interesting. It's called Firespell by Chloe Neill. She also writes a series of books called the Chicagoland Vampire Series. But this book is the first in a series of YA books called the Dark Elite series. It is set in Chicago like her adult books, but is a totally different story line.
