Hi JD, I was just curious. I was reading the list of books you had lined up for reading previously on another thread and wondered if you had to read them (were they from your publisher?) or were they something you just picked up. I thought it was something that maybe the publisher wanted you to check out to drum up sales - by putting a proven best selling author on the book as a promo, kind of like your stamp of approval. Do you have to comment? Is it always in the same genre?
I know from my own experience that I'm more likely to pick up the book if I'm umming and ahhing if said recommendation is from an author I like. Or take a look at the author for the same reason.
I wouldn't care either way, I'm just thinking if it was a requirement when you become successful?

No, it's not a requirement, though it is appreciated. The books that I listed are things that I'm reading at the moment on my own. I tend not to talk about anything that I've read for the purpose of blurbing until the book is out and it's pretty rare for me to blurb a book. I've only offered two blurbs since I was first published. I just don't have a lot of time to read at the moment.
I don't have to comment on what I've read. I won't talk about something that I didn't like. I don't want to sway someone by my negative opinion. I can be a very picky and moody reader. I only offer blurbs in my own genre.

Thanks for answering JD. I think that its a compliment when anyone reads an authors work. They put alot of effort into it and just want to bring their world into peoples lives that will enjoy it. I'm generally of the philosophy that if you have nothing good to say then don't say it. Or divert the comment to something that you did like about it. There's always something you can get out of a book, as long as it gets a reaction, a good spin can be added if you have the right perspective.
