In Dawnbreaker, Barrett, Alpha for the Savannah Pack is put in an awkward positions. The naturi are hunting down Mira and they are using the werewolves as their personal foot soldiers. His people are being slaughtered, his brothers killed, his sister and mother threatened.
Barrett threatens to hand Mira over to the naturi if she doesn't leave Savannah before the last of his people are killed.
So is he a coward for turning on Mira or is he simply looking out for his own kind?

Hmm, coward? That's kind of harsh. I think he was starting to freak out a bit but, he's got to look out for his own kind too. Were's have no control over themselves when the naturi come calling and I am sure that makes them feel vulnerable, and out of control. So, i understand his position, but I felt he wasn't aware of what was actually going on, and when Danaus "explained" to him what the deal was he stepped back.
I kind of like Barrett - I hope to see a bit more of him.

I would have to disagree with that. He is a coward. His solution to all of his problems is to just sacrifice Mira, a supposed friend. He knows that the naturi are a destructive force that pretty much wants to wipe out all human like creatures from this Earth. Sacrificing Mira would do nothing but buy him some time. As he suggested to Mira, he could just get out of the area if he is that concerned. It seems like he also is trying to save face. Sometimes one must learn to regroup and come back stronger.
The fact that he would make a deal with naturi is pretty bad. It wasn't as a strategy but simply to save his clan and his own hide. That weakness in character pissed me off. I wanna smack him a few and tell him to stand up and fight. At this point I see him weaker than Tristan and that's saying a lot. *bounces to the next thread*

Coward? No way. He was made it clear he would do whatever he needed to do to keep his people safe. I think that's pretty noble, especially considering he threatened a vampire who could gut him in a heartbeat.

Hmm... perhaps more emotionally stressed? And that it's just making him coward-ish.
He was tough enough to stand by his people when he could of simply turned up blanks for them. He stood up to a short-tempered vampire and a total bad-ass vampire hunter to speak his point, so that's sort of showing guts.
But he did ruin it when he turned to desperate measures like implying he would hand her dead body over to everyone's enemy. And defiantly put a toe over the line when he demanded her out of the territory they both share.
But yeah, stress probably thwarted his more reasonable decisions.

I don't think werewolves and vampires can actually be FRIENDS. So, I don't think I ever saw Barrett as Mira's friend. The had a truce, and they lived and took care of the city, but best buds? oh, heck no. Does Mira trust ANYONE? That's what I want to know.
When your desperate you'll do anything to save your "family". Barrett was seriously FREAKING OUT - and yeah, he went to far w/ the whole "bring the naturi your dead body" bit, but I don't think he was thinking clearly. After Danaus had a little come to jesus meeting with him in the kitchen I think he got the message - he backed off, after a little postulating...tsk tsk..MEN!
Barrett is a take ACTION sort of guy! Action first, think later.

TOTAL COWARD in more than one occasion. not just the turning her over to the naturi incident, but over the course of the books and unbound he has been more than willing to let his people to do his fighting for him because he's a true coward that always hids behind others and has to point a finger of who to blame as long as its not directed towards him.
he wants to say he is doing what is best for his family, but a true leader would have realized that the best thing for him to do is take his pack and leave. even if mira was gone as he has tried to order her to when the naturi calls them again to attack vampires does he not think the rest of the vampires left in savannah wouldn't slaughter them with or without mira there tryin to survive? sorry but barret is one of the few people i would really love to see die! tristan i like because there's reasons for the way he is.....barrett is just a true coward that hides from anything that can become bad.

I wouldn't put him in either of the extreme categories. i think he was beginning to panic because he couldn't seem to protect his pack, and he was seeking to find the easiest solution, not the best one.

probably wouldn't label him a coward, more naive, weak, or maybe even just plain lazy. he sees Mira as the only problem. I can't believe that he would turn on his ally (his father's ally, his grandfather's ally) so easily. all I know is that if Mira and Danaus are able to eliminate the naturi from the earth she still better not depend on Barrett to ever watch her back. He's a lost cause in my mind now.
