Regarding Who/What LaVina is, I talked about it a bit in this post regarding what Mira is: jocelynndrake.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=generalseriesdiscussion&thread=64&page=1#2486To summarize: * LaVina can do witch magic, which indicates she isn't a vampire in disguise or something like that. * LaVina seems to recognize whatever Mira's heritage is when others haven't. * LaVina knows how to banish bori. More specifically, she knows how Mira can banish bori. * LaVina is obviously more powerful than any other witch we've seen, physically in addition to magically. * LaVina helped Mira and Danaus banish Gaizka. Obviously, saving Savannah was a good reason, but there could be other motivations involved. * LaVina lacks an aura... since nothing we've seen so far has done this, we can really only hypothesize as to why this is. Perhaps she's merely powerful enough to hide it from others, much like Jabari hiding his power. She could be something we've never even seen before as others have mentioned, but if we consider these options there's an unlimited number of options and it's just guesswork at that point. The idea of her being dead and lacking an aura is okay, until you consider that all vampires are technically dead as well and yet have auras. Perhaps it's the lack of a soul instead or something, but who knows? My personal guess is that LaVina has bori heritage or powers as a source somehow. The possibility of multiple bori "factions" has been mentioned before (ie. angels vs. demons). Also, it's merely assumed that all the bori and their hosts were successfully banished. Perhaps LaVina works with or is even a host for a member of this "angelic" faction of bori. It'd explain how she knows the way to banish Gaizka (aside from the witch banishing spells), why she might have insight into what Mira's heritage is, why she has so much power, why she helped them banish a member of the "demonic" faction, why she took a "wayward child" such as Mira "home" somewhere, and why Mira was so terrified for going with her. Now to wait and see how close (or completely wrong) I am.

Just a quick ideas About her Aura, She might be cloaking it ,(I really hate LaVina for letting Lily Die and might not be objective). But she might be afraid Bori or Naturi detecting her as could be ether one. Naturi can do Earth Witch Magic and come in a lot forms, The Hansel and Gretel story was not about witch but a Hag there often confused in modern storys with Old witches,A creature that live's in the woods alone and is a type of Fairy, Baba-Yaga one the most famous in legend and said to be quite God like. And act very strangely protecting a child like grandmother one minute and eating it the next (kind of The ultimate Bi-Polar Grand Mother) and a few wear said to have the power to hide there souls in things, to make them selfs unkillable by hiding the souls from death. There were said to be natural shape shifters and look like some of time like old women and have Super human strength. They were master witchcraft but were never human nor really Witches as they had Never been Human to begin with. They were sort of a wood Spirit that embodied the woods them selfs.Magical and one minute kind and fun and the next deadly and trying to eat you. So she might be a Hag Naturi. She might not be but thought I throw it out there since no else did. God I hate LaVina and I might not be impartial. My reasons here jocelynndrake.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=talk&action=display&thread=144&page=1(Let's be clear I hate her and want her to die slowly but she's realy well written.) Danaus said he saw her covered in Dog blood out in the woods one and that would be blood soul magic in this world but it would also be a kind of typical Hag behavior, Dancing Naked covered in animal blood is something that Baba-Yaga her self dose. She lives in woods alone in cottage, Hag live alone or in 3's in a cottage in woods or in a cave. There said to both be annoyed to get Visitors and be Gracious Hosts offering treats ( cakes candies Cookies) And pride them selfs on there cooking skills, a cake , pork chop, Human baby. So maybe she a Baba-Yaga type Naturi or maybe Baba-Yaga her self still walking the earth alone. There also said to be major type Magical Teachers and have to balance every good Deed with a bad deed to keep their balance as part of their immortality hence the reason for eating Human Babys. So if you asked a Hag's Help to marry the handsome prince the hag would kidnapped you and sell you as a slave for a giant you keeps you for 5 years till your rescued by the Prince. Because the Hag could not go in a straight line and do a good deed it had to be balanced in it's good with evil. Or you might break your leg in the woods and be starving and the Hag cut's it off and eats it and drops you off at a Village all healed up but missing a leg. Gives a old new meaning to No good deed goes unpunished. Might be why she let Lily die and Needed Mira to cast the spell. Well there my guess and why.

Wow, wasn't it good? SO GOOD. The ending had me SO on edge. It's a good thing we don't have to wait long because I think I would have had to throw something. Granted, I know Mira isn't dead, and Danaus is alive, so that makes it better.
On Lily-- do you, or did you, guy watch Buffy or the Angel series by Joss Wheadon? Well, I have this practice of never considering someone dead until they are REALLY dead and don't come back into the picture in any form. So, I am in complete denial right now. Lily might come back. Shhhh...just let me be in my own little World of Denial.
I thought the POV was very cool. At first I missed knowing what Mira was thinking but then I really enjoyed getting into Danaus's head too. I did find myself thinking "OMG what did Mira really feel about that?". LOL
For some reason reading the book from his point of view made Mira look more fragile or perhaps more girly than I thought of her normally. That may have just been me though-- because she kicked butt like she always does. Maybe it was her mind being messed with that gave me that impression. I'm not sure.
Vikki-- Hmmm...I don't know. I didn't think she seemed like a ghoul or zombie-- but I'm not sure what.... an angel-like creature of some sort?

I'm starting to think that Mira isn't suppose to be a nightwalker, because first Rowe said it and now so did LaVina, which sucks because Mira makes an awesome nightwalker ! I wonder how Danuas is going to betray Mira . I really don't want this series to end

I'm sitting here in Maryland in my lovely hotel room... thinking... debating....
Should I give another hint?
I am afraid that sometime next week my publisher will post the first few chapters of the book and the secret is given away in the first chapter. No hiding it then.
But for now, I like playing the guessing game.
So .... read on if you dare....
The logic and deduction for Mira's heritage has been brilliant and I have to applaud the readers for thinking so intensely on this one. You've stuck to exactly everything that I've introduced.
But that's where the problem lies.... with each book, I've expanded the world a little bit, introduced something new. LaVina and Mira's past represent something new.
So, here are some clues to remember: 1. Mira was born with the ability to create and wield fire 2. Her powers are expanding as she gains more knowledge and age 3. Danaus is going to be very upset with the truth considering his past
Okay, I think I've said enough. Let your imaginations run wild.

Moonsanity, Just my thoughts and I could be wrong, but I think Mira came off more girlie because this is one of the first times that we saw her heavily in her own domain. I think it offered her a little bit of a comfort zone to relax vs. Venice or Peru or London. At the same time, she had two different creatures messing with her mind plus the weight of Lily, all making her more vulnerable. I like to think that Mira was still kick ass, but just with a little more on her mind. Or maybe I'm wrong.

All along I guess I assumed Mira was suppose to be something other than a nightwalker, but they turned her so she would be their tool, and not an enemy. I do not have the brilliant deduction most of you seem to have, so ignore me if this is lame. After reading Pray for Dawn I wondered if Mira would end up being the one who would END the war. Perhaps finding a way to mediate between all the factions??

We were typing at the same time:)
I had forgotten that she wasn't traveling this time. That could be. I also thought that maybe since you wrote it from a man's POV that he saw her as sexy and possibly wanting her to need him, so she seemed more girly? But then again he likes that she's tough. I did really like seeing her interact with the local people.
She did indeed still kick ass, even with people fooling with her mind:)

UGH....I'm bad at guessing games !!!!! lol imma just wait for the book because my brain is starting to hurt but the only thing Danaus feels really strongly about is being a Bori so maybe she is....IDK imma just wait and see, and about Pray for Dawn I loved seeing Mira so vulnerable, it made me wish we could kind of see more of her like that but since the next book is going to be bloody, I guess not

Don't worry. We get to see a different kind of vulnerable Mira in WAIT FOR DUSK, which results in a pissed Mira, which leads to a bloody Mira.

uuugh! the wait is killing me! Lily coming in the picture made me REALLy wish that Danaus or Mira would suggest that they both keep Lily together..lol which really was impossible coming from both.. but the picture really made me see them like one big happy family if not for the naturi, the bori and the coven!! Danaus (daddy) Mira (mommy) Tristan (big brother) and Lily (little sister)..lol Gaizka is really a prick!i hate him.. but he is a really interesting character.. wondering if he would once again show up in future books.. and one thing that really confuses me, i thought that Danaus could sense a bori?but why in some scenes he cant sense Gaizka? and if he suddenly shows up possessing a body it would take moments before he realizes its the bori..grrr.. then LaVina.. what is she really?at the end of the book i really dont think she's human.. and she knowing that Mira wasn't supposed to be a nightwalker makes her more intriguing! Mira was definetly not 100% human before being reborn.. i dont think Rowe mentioned she was human when he sensed her before seeing her and then her ability.. not bori not naturi not purely human, another creature we dont know of? about her use of earth magic, i think while she was still human, she taps into earth magic, then switched to soul when she was reborn.. and Tristan?what happened to him?will/did he survive?how about her bodyguards?i was hoping to see the whole gang visiting Matsui's home.. well, what really caught me was the Mira and Danaus' scenes!! from the First Communion, i really cant get it out of my head!what would Mira think if Danaus lost control and bit her?haha! and it was like fulfilling to know that Danaus was somewhat attracted to Mira from the start, and did Mira got a taste of his blood when he accidentally pricked his tongue?uugh! More Mira and Danaus scenes!!
