It's been pretty quiet around the forums as of late- I think we could all use a fresh topic to chat about, and what better to talk about than the holidays? just say whatever you want- favorite holiday song, favorite drink or food, what you're planning on giving for gifts, etc. I'll start! This year, the school quarter ended earlier than it has in past years so I ended up making and handing out christmas treats on december 1st lol. I made swirly peppermint bark, with white and milk chocolate swirled together with crushed candy canes pressed into the top. I packaged everything up in cute little decorative cellophane bags I found at target and handed them out to people. The response I got back was all good Every year my friends and I exchange holiday cards. This is one of the highlights of each holiday for me because my friends and I are literally spread out all across the globe! Sounds kind of crazy, right? What keeps us all connected is that we all work for The Leaky Cauldron, the number one online Harry Potter news website. I love sending and receiving all of these cards from so many people all over the world. Makes me smile!

I work in a mall and only got 3 days off last month ... it's a miracle that I haven't shot someone ... mmmmm...no it's not ... I don't own a gun. that might explain some of it. *laughs*
anyway, the roomies and I get up kinda early, do breakfast, and while it's in the oven cooking, we open presents and then have breakfast together. the rest of the days is spent playing board games and general goofing off.
been a little depressed at how down right cranky people have been this year... like really freaking rude. and it's not just me working too much either ... other people have noticed it to. someone said it was because people had to spend money they didn't really have on christmas ... I don't buy that one.

Carnagsehls - I've noticed the rudness too. It is very sad and depressing.
As for our christmas tradition - we have two girls, so, there will be early morning screaming and excitedness. I'll be very sleepy and possibly grumpy from being woken up so early, and then the kids will run around like crazy people. Christmas is NOT the same w/o kids.
I've got the tree up - the presents bought and wrapped, all the packages mailed out and have been baking goodies the rest of the time. Waiting for Santa to come. I hope he brings me money!

As part of my contribution to the holiday spirit, here is a quick video featuring one of my favorite holiday songs.

My Christmas tradition keep evolving as my brothers and I get older. We used to get up really, really early and meet at my parents house where we would open presents and have an enormous breakfast. This year, one of my brother's has a daughter to consider. So, this year we are going to meet at his house in the afternoon for a large Christmas lunch/dinner. Also, we are not exchanging gifts this year, but just rather spend some quality time together. In case you missed it on my blog, I posted a picture of my Christmas tree. jocelynndrake.blogspot.com/2009/12/completed-revisions-for-book-5.htmlIt went up a little after Halloween, which is really early for me. However, it coincided with a move. I already had all the boxes out so I thought I would go ahead and put up the tree instead of having to drag the boxes out and move the furniture around again in another couple weeks. Next year, I'm getting a real tree and it's not going up until after Thanksgiving. For me, Christmas day is going to be quiet. Some time with my family and probably some quiet time with a video game.

This is pretty much my Christmas of Bah humbug-ing. I'll make some appearances to meet up with family but for the most part it'll just be eating food. I don't really want any gifts this year. I haven't put up any decorations. I'll likely come home early to finish cat sitting for my friend. Well I will try to cheer up an out of state friend on skpye when I come back so he won't be by himself in return for his help on thanksgiving (got the flu and was banned from humans for a week.) Perhaps I will get those chocolate chip cookies I've been craving.

I forgot that I do actually have a couple holiday traditions. This week, I attended a performance of the Nutcracker ballet. It was amazing as always. It also give me a chance to get downtown to Cincinnati to see the Christmas display.
Also, this weekend, I went to the Cincinnati Zoo Festival of Lights. It's a massive Christmas light display and a chance to see the animals in the winter time. It was great, but cold, time last night.

Christmas traditions for my family is usually a huge gathering at my grandmother's house, special dinner included. It's supposed to be all warm and cuddly and together-y, which it is. To an extent (laugh) In the end, it's just madness. I love watching my little cousins and nephew running around with their toys, remembering that not-so-long-ago-time when that was me... makes me feel like crying and laughing at the same time. The coming New Year is something different though. I usually spend it out with my family, but my friends refuse to let me this year. I'm being dragged to a party, and the frightening thing is all the craziest people I know are going to be there. Oh, panic, panic, fun, fun

Before we moved to Canada we lived in New Orleans, every Christmas we would go see the bonfires on the levee along the mississippi river. They build them out of logs and come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. On Christmas eve they light them and from what I understand it's to help Guide Santa to New Orleans. It's really neat.

That festival of lights sounds fun! Here, we have something called the Trail of Lights and it's basically a light show set up that you drive through. I enjoy it, my brother not so much lol.
I'm trying to convince my mom the necessity of making a cheesecake this year. She doesn't seem so keen on the idea, but we've been making cheesecakes every year during the holidays for awhile now so I know I can talk her around.
This weekend my mom took us to see Wicked for my birthday, and it was AMAZING! I wish i had gotten the chance to drive around SF a bit to see the christmas decorations but SF is no fun to drive around, so we came straight home after the show. If you have never seen Wicked, I really suggest you go when you get the chance. It is worth the money and time- it is actually my favorite musical!
Every year we do a rib roast or some other large cut of beef slow roasted in the oven. This year is no different, but we might switch up the potatoes and do roasted potatoes or mashed potatoes instead. Haven't made up my mind about that yet- my mom lets me handle the potatoes.

I hope everyone had a great christmas, or hanukkah, or whatever else it is that you celebrate (sorry those two are the only ones I can think of right now off the top of my head).
Happy New Year!
